Imaginative Patio Ideas for Modern and Traditional Gardens

In the spring, garden lovers turn their attention to the subject of patios. There is a whole summer of entertainment on the horizon and people need to make the most of the sunshine while it lasts. Our attitude towards our outdoor spaces has changed somewhat over the last twenty years; I suspect it is because of the makeover programs on the television.

We are going to take a look at some different styles today in the hope that it will inspire you to get outdoors and create a brilliant seating area for yourself. If you have no confidence with DIY, use a landscape gardener to design and build something special for you.

Hard Surfaces

There are many hard materials you can use to create a stunning seating area. They all need a robust foundation if they are to last for decades without shifting. Here is how to make one.

  • Dig and remove the ground to a depth of eight inches.
  • Use a vibrating compactor to solidify the base of the hole. The more work you put into this part of the job, the better.
  • Fill the hole with a mixture of sand and hardcore to within an inch from the surface and use the compactor once more. The mix is available from your local builders merchant.
  • When the foundation is rock hard, put down a layer of sand or lay the surface on a bed of mortar.

Concrete

Concrete paving slabs are cheap and enable you to cover an expanse quickly. They are not as attractive as some other products; I think we should avoid that material in the garden.

Stone

Natural stone slabs are fantastic in any setting and will weather over time. After a few years, they look like a natural feature. They are more expensive than the concrete flagstones but are worth every penny, in my opinion.

Decking

Timber decking looks beautiful in any setting. Take a look at suppliers like Patio Living for inspirational ideas that you could apply in your garden. Most people can construct the deck as a DIY project because it is versatile and can adapt to any situation. Unlike the other surfaces, it doesn’t need a firm foundation because it rests on pillars that you concrete into the ground. The quality of the product is down to your carpentry skills and the timber you use. Though we all strive for perfection, there is nothing wrong with a rustic looking platform as long as it is safe and sturdy.

Composite decking is a modern alternative that will not rot over time. I don’t think it looks as good as real wood, but some people prefer it because it is virtually maintenance free.

There is a lot to think about before you break ground and start constructing your entertainment area. I hope that I have cleared some of the fog from the subject so that you can proceed with confidence. There are many things to can use to dress and enhance the patio, but they are a subject for my next article. Make the most of your garden, it is a valuable resource.
